A sound bathroom that simply looked its age

Terrazzo floors, a builder vanity and a shower curtain.

The room worked. The terrazzo was intact, the window was well placed and the layout made sense for the space available. What dated it was every surface and fitting in it.

That is the useful distinction at a site visit: whether a bathroom needs rebuilding or refinishing. This one needed the second, which is a shorter schedule and a smaller number.

Warmth without losing the light

A fluted wood wall does the work a mirror wall used to.

The vertical slats behind the vanity add texture and warmth to a small room without eating any floor space. Paired with the wall-hung vanity, more of the floor stays visible, which is the oldest trick there is for making a compact bathroom read as larger.

Tiling the tub surround to the ceiling and keeping the window unobstructed does the rest. The room is the same size it always was.

Wood in a wet room is a detailing question, not a material question.

Fluted panelling belongs outside the splash zone, sealed, with the tile doing the work anywhere water actually lands. Put the same panel inside a shower and it will tell you about it within two Florida summers. Where the line falls between the two is the whole decision.
